Rec Room’s 2018 was Filled with Community Milestones

rec room 2018

In November 2017, Against Gravity released Rec Room for the PlayStation VR. It had already seen success on other platforms such as Vive and Oculus, and it even has cross-platform features. We’re over a year out from the PSVR release, and Against Gravity has shared a long list of stats from Rec Room in 2018. Chief among them is the number of downloads, of which Rec Room has breached one million across all platforms.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55CteR3bXEc]

Rec Room is very much a community game, allowing players to get together and goof around in all sorts of pre-built minigames and other activities. But players can also design and share their own rooms, which opened the door for all kinds of user-generated content and emergent game development. This has led to a healthy life for Rec Room, and here’s what happened in 2018:

  • 400,000+ player created rooms
  • 70 million room visits
  • 40% of all player time is now spent in player created rooms
  • Player created rooms that have been visited 300,000+ times
  • Rec Room is installed on over 1 million VR headsets
  • Over 5 million photos taken
  • 5.2 million friends made

Millions! Against Gravity also nods to all the updates that have come to Rec Room in the past year, including launching a website that allows players to share their content, a programming system that led to players creating their own games and features, all kinds of new in-game items, animations, messaging, and a lot more.

If you ended up with a PlayStation VR set over the holidays, now’s as good a time as any to check out Rec Room, especially since it’s available on the PlayStation Store for free.

Now Loading – Our Gaming New Year’s Resolutions

Now loading gaming new years resolutions gaming

New Year’s resolutions are a common way for people to instill a new start at the beginning of the new year. Whether it’s getting into a better workout regimen, drinking less (or more. We don’t judge), or setting out to complete a dream you’ve long had, flipping the calendar can provide a great opportunity. Goals of physical fitness and overall well being are noble resolutions, but this is PlayStation LifeStyle, which means we wanted to make things a little bit more gaming related.

As we cross into 2019, the PSLS staff has a number of gaming New Year’s resolutions. Some are simple goals, like trying to complete the insane backlogs that we’ve accrued, while others are deeper, like attempting to not let the insatiable need to finish or Platinum a game control us. Here’s what we’ll be striving for in the new year in terms of our gaming lives.

While that may be what we’re striving for over the next 365 days, only time will tell if we actually keep these resolutions. What gaming New Year’s resolutions are you setting for yourself this year? Are there games you’ll be trying to clear out of your backlog? Will you be trying out any new genres or games that you wouldn’t usually? Did you accomplish any goals last year that you set at the beginning of 2018? Take to the first PSLS comments section of 2019 to let us know.

Make sure you check out our past Now Loading topics and let us know if there is a specific topic you would like us to tackle for future Now Loading posts in the comments below or by sending an email to [email protected]

PSLS Staff’s Top 10 Games of 2018 – Everyone’s Favorite Games of the Year

Staff top 10 games of 2018

2018 is just a week away from being over, our Game of the Year 2018 awards have been handed out, and we are well on our way towards considering what 2019 games will earn those awards in a year’s time. While our Game of the Year Awards were full of great titles, plenty of other games didn’t receive honors.

We wanted to offer the PlayStation LifeStyle staff an opportunity to tell you about their individual top 10 games of 2018, whether or not they landed awards this year. There are some obvious contenders that appear on nearly every list, but we’ve also got some surprises, non-PlayStation games, and guilty pleasures that people have loved playing in 2018, even if they weren’t award worthy.

At the end of the day, isn’t enjoying the games and having fun with them what it’s all about?

PSLS Staff – Everyone’s Top 10 Games of 2018

Some, like our Game of the Year winner, God of War, appear on multiple lists, while other writers have some eclectic tastes with some unique games and genres. Plenty of people on the staff loved games that didn’t appear on the PlayStation platform, with Nintendo Switch and even mobile titles making appearances. There are even some widely disliked games that some people on our staff just loved. What’s absolutely clear when looking at these lists is that 2018 was an incredible year for games with some great titles that you definitely shouldn’t miss. Even if the games don’t appeal to everybody, what’s most important is that we’ve had fun playing them.

Did any of your own top 10 games of 2018 land our our lists too? Anything that none of us mentioned that stuck out to you? Let us know your own top 10 games of 2018 in the comments below.

PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection Included Games Worth $1,500 in 2018

playstation plus 2018 games

How much value each player derives from PlayStation Plus depends on a number of factors but it’s interesting to see some numbers put together to analyze the Instant Game Collection’s offerings in a given year. Folks over at Polygon have done exactly that: number crunching to give us an overall picture of what we received in exchange for our money in 2018.

This year, IGC offered 76 games worth a total retail value (as of Friday, December 21) of $1,508.74. This is $221.49 more than 2017’s combined total. The average critic score of IGC’s 2018 lineup sits at 69.5, which is 1.8 points lower than 2017.

The highest-scoring lineup, which included SOMA and OnRush, was released in December, with an average score of 82.8. August‘s lineup (Mafia III, Dead By Daylight) offered the highest dollar value, with games totaling $205.91.

April‘s linuep, which included Mad Max and TrackMania Turbo, was the lowest-scored at 60.5, in terms of average critic review. September was highlighted by God of War 3 Remastered but it remained the lowest dollar value month, with games totaling $55.95.

Overall, four games included in the IGC 2018 lineup are currently priced at $40 and above at retail, six are valued at $30-$39.99, and nine are valued at $25-$29.99. 19 of the games offered with PS Plus retail from $15 to $19.99, and 27 of them are valued between $5 and $9.99.

The average age of IGC games this year sits at 3.2 years. January‘s lineup, which included Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and Batman: The Telltale Series, offered the newest games (average age of 1.74 years at the time). The average age of May‘s lineup, headlined by Beyond: Two Souls and Rayman Legends, was the highest (4.75 years old at the time).

Which month was your favorite? Share your thoughts on IGC with us below.
