Jason Bateman to direct John Cena in action comedy for Netflix

Jason Bateman, John Cen,  and the writer of Game Night are teaming up for a Netflix action comedy. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Ozark star is slated to direct Cena in a yet-to-be-titled project written by Mark Perez.

Per the report, the film tells the story of “a family that gets stuck in an old abandoned movie studio. The sets come to life and the family members find themselves stuck in various movies.”

Bateman will produce the film with his Aggregate Films partner Michael Costigan, alongside Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum.

Cena is in high demand these days after comedic turns in Daddy’s Home 2 and Bumblebee. The former WWE star recently signed on for the family comedy Playing with Fire, and has already wrapped Project X-traction with Jackie Chan, and The Voyage of Doctor Doliitle with Rami Malek and Tom Holland.

Sherri Saum joins Netflix’s Locke & Key

Sherri Saum has joined Connor Jessup (American Crime), Emilia Jones (Utopia), and Jackson Robert Scott (It) in the Netflix series Locke & Key, according to TVLine. The actress will play a teacher named Ellie Whedon, who carries a close connection with the Locke family. Saum’s notable credits include How to Get Away with Murder, Revenge, Gossip Girl, Rescue Me and One Life to Live.

Locke & Key is a horror/fantasy series that revolves around three siblings who, after the gruesome murder of their father, move to their ancestral home in Massachusetts only to find the house has magical keys that give them a vast array of powers and abilities. Little do they know, a devious demon also wants the keys, and will stop at nothing to attain them.

The IDW Publishing Locke & Key comic book franchise, co-created by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez, has garnered both awards and acclaim during its ten-year run; has been translated into dozens of languages across the globe; and has sold millions of copies worldwide.

Meredith Averill (The Good Wife) will co-showrun the series with Carlton Cuse. Cuse and series co-creator Joe Hill (the son of Stephen King) co-write the first episode with Aron Eli Coleite. The new series will not retain any of the cast or footage used from Hulu’s attempt at adapting the series, instead completely re-developing the series and re-casting the parts, except for IT‘s Jackson Robert Scott who will stay on from the Hulu version. The previous series’ pilot was directed by IT‘s Andy Muschietti.

Lindsey Springer for Cuse’s production company Genre Arts will executive produce alongside David Alpert and Rick Jacobs of Circle of Confusion. Andy and Barbara Muschietti (IT, Mama) will executive produce alongside Ted Adams and David Ozer from IDW Entertainment.

Locke & Key has had a long history of making it to another medium with Dimension Films purchasing the rights in 2008. Following that, a television series was in development at FOX in 2010 (which was even given a series order, but never went forward after the pilot was produced), and finally a failed film adaptation with producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci in 2014 with Universal Pictures. The failed pilot by Hulu is just the most recent link in the series’ attempts to come to life.

Always Wanted a Resident Evil TV Show? A Resident Evil Netflix Series is Reportedly in the Works

Resident Evil Netflix resident evil tv series

Resident Evil 2 might just be gracing consoles—and according to our own review, it’s a game that will be a strong contender come awards time—but word is you might also be able to get your Resident Evil fix on Netflix pretty soon. A report from Deadline says that Netflix is developing a Resident Evil TV series with Constantin Film, the German production company behind the six Resident Evil films. They are currently looking for a showrunner to take on the series, so don’t expect it to launch anytime soon.

According to the report, Netflix plans to use the series to “expand the Resident Evil universe and deepen the…mythology.” The existing background for the franchise will be used as a starting point for the drama—Umbrella Corporation, T-virus, undead monsters—and the show will “incorporate all of Resident Evil’s signature elements, including action sequences and Easter eggs.” Hopefully the critical success of the Resident Evil 2 remake will give the future showrunner some ideas for how to blend the science and drama with classic “Romero-like” horror. The six Resident Evil films notoriously set aside many of those classic horror elements in favor of big action sequences with the undead and genetically modified beasts.

The original six Resident Evil films by Paul W.S. Anderson starred Milla Jovovich as Alice, a former Umbrella employee that is dealing with the aftermath of the outbreak while trying to bring down the evil corporation. Then there are clones and a whole lot of other madness that spirals out of control. Word is that the Resident Evil Netflix series would not follow this same story, though it’s unknown if it would be a complete reboot. In the films, Alice interacted with many characters from the games, including Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, and Leon S. Kennedy. Their roles in the films were far removed from the game series canon and served more as Easter eggs in this separate take on the Resident Evil universe. Any Resident Evil TV series (particularly one by the same production company) is likely to take the same approach, offering nods to characters and events from the game, but ultimately following its own path and story.

What do you think of the Resident Evil Netflix series news? Do you want it to take on the more action-oriented approach of the films, or would you like to see it embrace the survival horror aspects of the games? Should it follow new characters during the infamous outbreak, or do you want a series based on the fan favorites? Let us know in the comments!

Punisher Season 2 Showdown Promo: No Holding Back

Punisher season 2 showdown promo: No holding back

Netflix has released a new Marvel’s The Punisher Season 2 promo featuring a Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) who’s ready for a showdown. Check out the video now below!

Former Marine-turned-vigilante Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) has been living a quiet life on the road until he suddenly becomes embroiled in the attempted murder of a young girl (Giorgia Whigham). As he is drawn into the mystery surrounding her and those in pursuit of the information she holds, Castle attracts a new target on his back as new and old enemies force him to confront whether he should accept his destiny and embrace a life as The Punisher.

RELATED: Marvel’s The Punisher Season 2 Trailer: Double Trouble

In the first season of The Punisher, Castle was seemingly free to resume his life without fear of prosecution, thanks to a Presidential pardon. We don’t know what will cause Castle to reclaim his Punisher persona, but it likely has something to do with Billy Russo’s return as Jigsaw — complete with a new mask. Amber Rose Revah’s Dinah Madani and Jason R. Moore’s Curtis Hoyle are the only other cast members officially returning from the show’s first season.

Annette O’Toole and Corbin Bernsen are also joining the show as Eliza and Anderson Schultz, respectively. Giorgia Whigham will portray Amy Bendix, with Floriana Lima as Krista Dumont, and Josh Stewart as John Pilgrim. Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal) serves as showrunner, writer, and executive producer.

The Punisher Season 2 will launch on Netflix on January 18, 2019.

Sex Education Season 1 Episode 1 Recap

Sex Education Season 1 Episode 1 Recap

Sex Education Season 1 Episode 1 Recap

Netflix’s new dramedy Sex Education has teenager Otis, the son of a well-respected sex and relationship therapist, holding his own sex therapy sessions at his school. The first season just dropped, so we will be recapping all eight episodes.

Touch a Nerve

On Otis’ first day of school, he discovered his English literature partner would be Adam Groff, the headmaster’s son who routinely bullied Otis’ gay best friend Eric. It was also heavily rumored at school that Adam had a large penis. Adam asked Otis where he lived and told him he would show up at his house that afternoon. The only problem was that Otis’ mother, Jean, was a sex therapist who saw patients at their sex-decor-filled house. Otis tried to hide everything incriminating, but was unsuccessful.

Jean showed up and made friends with Adam. They smoked weed together, and he flirted with her. However, Jean pointed out that while there are numerous health benefits from cannabis, one of the drawbacks was possible impotence. This struck a nerve with Adam, and he left in a rush.

Maeve Wiley was a rebellious teenager, who hung out in the restroom of a building closed for asbestos and sold papers to other students. She secretly spent time there with Aimee, one of the “Untouchables”, Moordale Secondary’s version of The Plastics. Aimee was seeing Adam, and she told Maeve that he had faked an orgasm with her.

“I’m Owning My Narrative”

Sex Education Season 1 Episode 1 Recap

Sex Education Season 1 Episode 1 Recap

The next day, Maeve ended up as Otis’ partner in biology, which was temporarily a sex ed class. During class, everyone received a video of Otis’ mother stroking an eggplant. Otis rushed outside, and the teacher instructed Maeve to go after him. They both ran into Adam in the asbestos restroom. He had taken too much Viagra, and his penis wouldn’t go down.

Otis helped Adam realize that the pressures of being the headmaster’s son and of having a large penis gave him performance anxiety. His penis finally went down, and to own his narrative, he showed his penis to the entire lunchroom. Adam was able to orgasm later with Aimee. However, it was break-up sex, and Adam continued his bullying out of anger and humiliation.

When Aimee told Maeve that Adam had an orgasm, Maeve had an idea that she proposed to Otis. He would provide sex therapy to students at Moordale, she would take care of the business end, and they would split everything 50/50. Otis reluctantly agreed.

Otis had his own problems related to sex. He hated masturbating and couldn’t do it. He even laid out the tools, like tissues, lotion, and magazines, to make it seem like he had. Jean noticed and asked why he pretended to masturbate. At the end of the episode, he confessed to her that he couldn’t masturbate, didn’t want to discuss it, and was dealing with it on his own.
