Now Loading – Our Gaming New Year’s Resolutions

Now loading gaming new years resolutions gaming

New Year’s resolutions are a common way for people to instill a new start at the beginning of the new year. Whether it’s getting into a better workout regimen, drinking less (or more. We don’t judge), or setting out to complete a dream you’ve long had, flipping the calendar can provide a great opportunity. Goals of physical fitness and overall well being are noble resolutions, but this is PlayStation LifeStyle, which means we wanted to make things a little bit more gaming related.

As we cross into 2019, the PSLS staff has a number of gaming New Year’s resolutions. Some are simple goals, like trying to complete the insane backlogs that we’ve accrued, while others are deeper, like attempting to not let the insatiable need to finish or Platinum a game control us. Here’s what we’ll be striving for in the new year in terms of our gaming lives.

While that may be what we’re striving for over the next 365 days, only time will tell if we actually keep these resolutions. What gaming New Year’s resolutions are you setting for yourself this year? Are there games you’ll be trying to clear out of your backlog? Will you be trying out any new genres or games that you wouldn’t usually? Did you accomplish any goals last year that you set at the beginning of 2018? Take to the first PSLS comments section of 2019 to let us know.

Make sure you check out our past Now Loading topics and let us know if there is a specific topic you would like us to tackle for future Now Loading posts in the comments below or by sending an email to [email protected]

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from PlayStation LifeStyle

PlayStation Christmas playstation lifestyle christmas

From all of us here at PlayStation LifeStyle, we’d like to wish you a merry Christmas and the happiest of holidays as we make our way into the new year. It’s been an incredible year for all of us here, from my own move to becoming the site’s Editor-in-Chief, to bringing on some great and talented writers. And while Thanksgiving may have been last month, I would be remiss not to mention my thanks for all of you. We wouldn’t be anywhere without the passionate readers and PlayStation fans that come to the site, so thank you for your loyalty and continued patronage of the site, even through all of our ups and downs. We know the ads can sometimes get bad. We know you don’t always agree with what we have to say. But we’re happy to serve you PlayStation news and content daily.

This isn’t just for old readers though! To all of our brand new readers who just got a PS4 for Christmas, or perhaps discovered a new place to find PlayStation news, we hope that you have a most wonderful of holidays. Whether you spend it with family and friends, or if it’s a controller keeping you company (or best of all, controllers, family, and friends all gathered together), let it be a time of great cheer. We’ve got a lot of plans coming up in 2019. There are a whole bunch of rumors that Sony’s got some big things cooking for 2019. For a site called PlayStation LifeStyle, that offers us some exciting opportunities. You can bet that we’ll be hitting the ground running in January, but for now, we’re taking a well-earned break to tear apart some wrapping paper, eat sweet treats, and drink a whole lot of beer while watching our families flail around playing Beat Saber. POP/STARS is far too addicting not to play.

If you’re looking around for something to read today, don’t miss our full Game of the Year Awards lineup for 2018. We handed out awards in 29 categories, with some games taking home multiple honors. You can also check out what each PSLS staff member’s top 10 games of 2018 were. Hopefully that will give you some ideas of what to buy with that gift card or cash you just got.

Merry Christmas, happy holidays, and remember that the greatest gift a game can give you is to put a smile on your face. As long as you are having fun, that’s what it’s all about.

PSLS Staff’s Top 10 Games of 2018 – Everyone’s Favorite Games of the Year

Staff top 10 games of 2018

2018 is just a week away from being over, our Game of the Year 2018 awards have been handed out, and we are well on our way towards considering what 2019 games will earn those awards in a year’s time. While our Game of the Year Awards were full of great titles, plenty of other games didn’t receive honors.

We wanted to offer the PlayStation LifeStyle staff an opportunity to tell you about their individual top 10 games of 2018, whether or not they landed awards this year. There are some obvious contenders that appear on nearly every list, but we’ve also got some surprises, non-PlayStation games, and guilty pleasures that people have loved playing in 2018, even if they weren’t award worthy.

At the end of the day, isn’t enjoying the games and having fun with them what it’s all about?

PSLS Staff – Everyone’s Top 10 Games of 2018

Some, like our Game of the Year winner, God of War, appear on multiple lists, while other writers have some eclectic tastes with some unique games and genres. Plenty of people on the staff loved games that didn’t appear on the PlayStation platform, with Nintendo Switch and even mobile titles making appearances. There are even some widely disliked games that some people on our staff just loved. What’s absolutely clear when looking at these lists is that 2018 was an incredible year for games with some great titles that you definitely shouldn’t miss. Even if the games don’t appeal to everybody, what’s most important is that we’ve had fun playing them.

Did any of your own top 10 games of 2018 land our our lists too? Anything that none of us mentioned that stuck out to you? Let us know your own top 10 games of 2018 in the comments below.

PlayStation LifeStyle’s Game of the Year 2018 Awards – Game of the Year Winner

PSLS Game of the Year awards 2018 Game of the Year

This awards feels like it’s been coming all week, but in truth, this award has been getting prepped all year. The Game of the Year is the best of the best, the top game that came out all year. That means we can only pick one, even if the year was filled with amazing games. 2018 was one of those years, from Red Dead Redemption 2, to God of War, to Marvel’s Spider-Man; these were just a small fraction of the incredible titles that should be played this year. Before we reveal which game won our top spot, here are the PlayStation LifeStyle nominations for Game of the Year in 2018.

Game of the Year 2018 Winner

God of War Game of the Year

God of War

Read our review.

God of War won our Best Narrative, Action Game, Adventure Game, Game Soundtrack, PlayStation Exclusive, and New Idea awards. Cory Barlog also won our Industry Person of the Year award, so it only makes sense that his passion and humility would translate to the best game of 2018. Cory Barlog isn’t solely responsible for God of War though. Santa Monica Studio has an extremely impassioned team of people that took a beloved character and extracted something new and wonderful out of him. They made Kratos a new father. A new husband. Someone trying hard to not be the man he once was. And they changed a familiar setting to meaningfully evolve the character and his world. They took a man once known for pure unfettered vengeance and gave him a lot more of a heart. Looking back at the games that released in 2018, there were a lot of great titles, but it’s quite clear now that God of War more than deserved to take the top honors as our Game of the Year.

Reader’s Choice Winner

God of War

Once again, your votes matched up with ours, making God of War the PSLS Readers’ Choice Game of the Year. Red Dead Redemption 2 followed up in second, and Marvel’s Spider-Man brought up a distant third. All of them are excellent games, but only one can be the best game of 2018, and you all agreed that it was 2018.

Now that we’ve revealed our Game of the Year, don’t miss our full lineup of winners and nominees for the PlayStation LifeStyle Game of the Year awards. We’ve gathered all 29 categories in one place so that you can easily see which games got top honors this year. Thank you to all of the amazing developers and publishers that made games this year. Thank you to our readers for participating and voting in our Game of the Year awards. 2018 might be over, but I’m looking forward to seeing which games grace this list next year.

PlayStation LifeStyle’s Game of the Year 2018 Awards – Biggest Surprise Winner

PSLS Game of the Year awards 2018 Biggest Surprise

There are certain mornings when you wake up, open up PSLS, Twitter, Reddit, or just your Google news feed, and the day doesn’t quite play out how you might have expected it to. There were a number of surprises that were hard to fathom this year, both good and bad. From massive publishers breaking the status quo on convention attendance to retro games being some of the hottest things this year, we were left saying “what is going on?” more than once. There was one particular surprising event that shocked us more than the others, however. Here are the PlayStation LifeStyle nominations for Biggest Surprise in 2018.

Biggest Surprise 2018 Winner

Sony not attending E3 2019 Biggest Surprise

Sony Skipping E3 2019

It just kind of seems unfathomable to think that Sony would entirely miss the biggest gaming expo, but the longer you look, the more it’s obvious the writing was on the wall. E3 has been shedding support from developers and publishers for years, we just didn’t expect the console manufacturer and one of the “Big Three” to step aside. Of course this has also led to rampant and wild speculation about the timing of announcements of future consoles. Could a PS5 be just around the corner? Is Sony skipping E3 because we’re getting another massive Sony event shortly before or after? Shawn Layden has heavily hinted about some major 2019 announcements for the company, so all we can do is wait and see. At the very least, we’ll know what this is all about sometime in the next year.

Reader’s Choice Winner

Sony Skipping E3 2019

It looks like you were just as surprised as we were to learn that Sony would be stepping away from E3 for the first time in the expo’s 20+ year history. It’s a shocking move that’s rocked the status quo of the gaming industry’s cadence, but perhaps it’s indicative of the next generation of consoles that are also rumored to upset the balance and launch gaming to entirely new places.

Don’t miss our full lineup of nominees for the PlayStation LifeStyle Game of the Year awards. We’ll be revealing more winners all throughout the week, leading up to the Game of the Year on Friday December 21.

PlayStation LifeStyle’s Game of the Year 2018 Awards – Best New Idea Winner

PSLS Game of the Year Awards 2018 Best New Idea

Developers are constantly coming up with new ideas for games. Whether it’s fresh mechanics, remixes of old ideas, or a whole new take on something as simple as difficulty options, games in 2018 were filled with new things to discover and conquer. Some ideas completely took us by surprise, wowing us and making us rethink what was even possible in games. What broke the status quo this year? Here are the PlayStation LifeStyle nominations for Best New Idea in 2018.

Best New Idea in 2018 Winner

Tetris Effect Best New Idea

Tetris Effect

Read our review.

Tetris might be an old idea, but Tetris in virtual reality is all new, bringing an incredibly fresh perspective to the classic game. We had our own Jenni Lada tell us why this was the best new idea in gaming in 2018.

“Tetris has been around since 1984. It is hardly new. Virtual reality didn’t start finding a place in the video game world until Sega’s VR-1 motion simulator in 1994 and Nintendo’s Virtual Boy in 1995. But it wasn’t until 2018 that the two met and hooked up, creating the stellar Tetris Effect in the process. It uses incredible, changing landscapes and immersive sounds to put you into a zen space as you attempt to clear as many blocks as possible. Once you drop tetrominoes, you just can’t stop.”

Reader’s Choice Winner

God of War’s Leviathan Ax

Kratos traded out the Blades of Chaos for new weapon—the Leviathan Ax—in his bearded reemergence. While we ultimately got back that classic Kratos, the chained blades never fully overtook the ax. This frosty weapon allowed for completely new combat scenarios and puzzle solving, being a very important part of Kratos’ adventure in the new God of War. Honorable mention here goes to the single shot camera in the same game, a camera that never cuts away from the very beginning of the journey, right to the very end credits.

PlayStation LifeStyle’s Game of the Year 2018 Awards – Best Fighting Game Winner

PSLS Game of the Year Awards 2018 Best Fighting Game

Fighting games have been a video game staple for decades, but some years really have something special for the fans of kicks and punches. We had some great games get nominated this year, including a brawler based on Final Fantasy and a new take on an extremely popular anime. Which one did we like the best? Here are the PlayStation LifeStyle nominations for Best Fighting Game in 2018.

Best Fighting Game 2018 Winner

Dragon Ball Fighterz best Fighting game

Dragon Ball FighterZ

Read our review.

It’s rare that a game can encapsulate the property it comes from so completely, but Dragon Ball FighterZ does just that. Our resident fighting game expert Lucas White told us why Dragon Ball FighterZ deserved this win.

“Akira Toriyama and video games have a long history, and Dragon Ball is at the heart of that history. But even with decades full of masterpieces such as Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest, and weird stuff like Tomba, no game has quite succeeded in the holy grail of bringing that art to life. That is, until Arc System Works broke new ground in translating 2D art to 3D visual structure with Guilty Gear Xrd, then translated that success to Dragon Ball FighterZ. This is the video game that looks like Dragon Ball brought to life in HD, more so than even recent anime projects. On top of that, it’s an incredible tribute to the 3-on-3 “Versus” concept that even Capcom seems to have left behind, bringing people from several disparate communities together and smashing Evo records. Dragon Ball FighterZ is a special game that shows you don’t need extra fluff or a big budget story mode to get a big audience to play a fighting game.”

Reader’s Choice Winner

Dragon Ball FighterZ

SoulCalibur VI fought a hard fight, but Dragon Ball FighterZ landed a knockout punch. It was clearly the favorite, winning both the staff and reader’s choice votes. And no, sorry to everyone that wrote in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. You might have forgotten that you’re on PlayStation LifeStyle, which means that all nominees and winners have to be PlayStation games.

PlayStation LifeStyle’s Game of the Year 2018 Awards – Best Multiplayer Winner

PSLS Game of the Year Awards 2018 Best multiplayer game

Best Multiplayer is an expansive category that can cross genres. Monster Hunter: World sits as a third-person RPG, teaming players against massive monsters that require intense teamwork to take down. Meanwhile, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 provides a tight first-person shooter that almost defines the genre. Lots of games have multiplayer in them these days, but which are the best of the best? Here are the PlayStation LifeStyle nominations for Best Multiplayer in 2018.

Best Multiplayer Game 2018 Winner

Destiny 2 Forsaken Best Multiplayer Game

Destiny 2: Forsaken

Read our review.

Destiny 2 had a rocky beginning last year, but Bungie completely turned the game around with Forsaken. The multiplayer experience allows players to connect both cooperatively and competitively. From six-player Raids that require intense coordination and communication, to Gambit, a brand new mode that pits players against each other and AI combatants, Destiny 2 has so much to offer its players. It sits at the perfect crossroads between an MMO and a first-person shooter, an experience that is as yet unrivaled. The Best Multiplayer category can include multiple genres of games. For this unique multiplayer experience that also crosses genres, there’s no question why it won our Best Multiplayer award.

Reader’s Choice Winner

Monster Hunter: World

Monster Hunter: World took the world by storm when it released, bringing the usually niche popularity of Monster Hunter to a much wider audience. Hunters can gather together to tackle enormous beasts, either choosing to kill or capture them, harvest their bodies for materials, and head back out to do it all over again. Our readers took a liking to Monster Hunter: World and made sure it won the top spot as the Best Multiplayer Game in 2018.

Don’t miss our full lineup of nominees for the PlayStation LifeStyle Game of the Year awards. We’re just getting started with the winners and we’ll be revealing more all throughout the week, leading up to the Game of the Year on Friday December 21.

PlayStation LifeStyle’s Game of the Year 2018 Awards – The Nominees

PSLS Game of the Year awards 2018

2018 has been a pretty incredible year for games of all shapes and sizes. Some amazing high-budget releases have taken the stage while smaller indie companies are also releasing heartfelt and passion driven titles. PlayStation in particular has been home to a number of memorable games that will go down as some of the best in history. As with every year, we’re taking some time as 2018 comes to a close to celebrate the games that released this year, awarding the best of the best with our Game of the Year Awards. Last year it was NieR: Automata that took that top spot. Who do you think will win it this year?

We’ve got a lot of categories this year because we wanted to give everything a fair chance to get recognized. All of the PSLS Game of the Year awards are chosen by the entire staff through an open nomination process, and then a final vote on the nominees. You might see some curious omissions in the nominees (Fortnite not in the Best Ongoing Game category?) and some surprising winners next week, but we think it speaks to the unique voice and diverse interests that the collective PlayStation LifeStyle staff has.

Today we’re only revealing the nominees. Starting next week on Monday, December 17, we will begin announcing the winners, leading up to our final Game of the Year 2018 award on Friday, December 21. This year we’re also allowing readers to vote in all 29 categories. While it won’t affect the site’s winner, we will announce the reader’s choice poll results alongside what won the PSLS staff vote.

Check out the gallery below for all of the PSLS Game of the Year Awards 2018 nominees.

Anyone can make their voice heard by either voting for one of our nominees or writing in a different choice themselves. Your submission will only be counted once. When we announce our own winners, we will also reveal which games won the reader’s choice vote.

What do you think of our nominees? Who do you think will take home awards when we reveal the winners next week? Let us know in the comments and stay tuned December 17-21 as we bring you all of the PSLS Game of the Year Awards 2108 winners.
