News: Sony has stealth-launched a quieter PS4 Pro

Digital Foundry has revealed that Sony has stealthily launched an updated version of the PlayStation Pro.

It’s nothing to get too excited about, though. The updated version of the high-end machine runs slightly quieter than the previous model, which was an updated edition of the original PS4 Pro launched in November 2016.

According to DF’s report, when testing God of War the PS4 Pro recorded a two-three decibel reduction in comparison to the previous PS4 Pro model. It’s more impressive when stacked against the original version: a six to seven decibel reduction in noise.

Apparently, this PS4 Pro ditches the three-prong connector used in the original mode, and instead utilises the same power supply seen in the PS4 Slim, Xbox One X, and Xbox One.

While not as quiet as the Xbox One X, it’s still a significant step up; DF even went so far as to call it ‘a discreet living room console.’ If you’re wondering where to get hold of one of these new PS4 Pros, they’re included in the Red Dead Redemption 2 hardware bundle.

My PS4 Pro came from the 2017 batch, and I can’t say I’ve ever had any problems with it. This is in strike contrast to my launch PS4, which after a few years sounded like a cross between an angry washing machine and a jet aircraft.
