Multiple Ubisoft Games Pushed Out of Spring 2020

During a financial earnings conference call held yesterday, October 25, Ubisoft delayed three of its biggest releases that were previously slated for Spring 2020. Watch_Dogs Legion, Gods and Monsters, and Rainbow Six: Quarantine have all been delayed from their respective dates and have been moved into the more amorphous time frame of 2020-2021 fiscal year.

Gods and Monsters was the earliest, originally set to release on Feb. 25, 2020, with Watch_Dogs Legion to follow on March 3, 2020. Rainbow Six: Quarantine had not been given a firm release date, but was aiming for somewhere in 2020. Considering that it has been a part of this delay, we can assume it might have been aiming for the Spring 2020 window as well, likely near the tail end of March. Now, these games will release sometime in the fiscal year 2020-2021, which means anywhere from April 2020, to the end of March 2021.

These changes were made after reflecting on the poor critical reception and disappointing sales of Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint, and to a lesser extent, Tom Clancy’s The Division 2, which I personally had thought had been received rather well. Because of this, the Spring 2020 big hitters were delayed, so as to give the teams behind these titles “more development time.” Ubisoft Co-Founder and CEO Yves Guillemot, spoke on the matter, saying,

For Ghost Recon Breakpoint, while the game’s quality appeared on track – based on E3, Gamescom, previews and our latest internal playtests –, critical reception and sales during the game’s first weeks were very disappointing. As we have done with past titles, we will continue to support the game and listen to the community in order to deliver the necessary improvements.

Guillemot continued, clarifying the studio’s reasoning behind the aforementioned delays:

“In this overall context, we have decided to postpone the releases of Gods & Monsters, Rainbow Six Quarantine and Watch_Dogs Legion until 2020-21. While each of these games already has a strong identity and high potential, we want our teams to have more development time to ensure that their respective innovations are perfectly implemented so as to deliver optimal experiences for players.”

So, it sounds like these games will be getting the benefit of more development time, but we the gamers will have to wait a little bit longer. Seems it will be unclear for quite some time when these games will be dated again, especially with the next generation of consoles set to arrive in that Holiday 2020 window. Perhaps some might launch on the newer hardware? Hard to say for sure.

Are you disheartened by any of these delays? Were you looking forward to any one (or maybe all) of these games? Let’s talk about all of this and more over on the PS Nation Forums, on Facebook, and on Twitter using #AskPSNation.
